Abstract
The authors retrospectively reviewed 21 patients who underwent 22 bone grafting procedures for early atraumatic avascular necrosis of femoral head to evaluate effectiveness of the procedure. The minimum follow up period was 2 years and evaluation
included clinical results using Merle d' Aubigne-Postel scale as modified by Charnely and radiographs using Ficats staging system.
@ES: The result were as follows.
1. All cases were males and 20 patients have bilateral involvement. The ages ranged from 26 to 67 years and mean age was 46.1 years.
2. According to the Ficat stage, Stage I was 8 cases (36%), Stage II were 14 cases(64%). At last follow up, Stage I were 1 cases (5%), Stage II were 4 cases (18%), Stage III were 8
cases (36%) and Stage IV were 9 cases (41%).
3. The successful results in clinical and roentgenological evaluations were obtained in 5 cases (23%). Progresslve collapse was not prevented in 17 cases (77%).
4. The role of core decompression with bone grafting in precollapse stage of avascular necrosis of femoral head is uncertain
